AAAI-13 is the Twenty-Seventh AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence (AI). The purpose of this conference is to promote research in AI and scientific exchange among AI researchers, practitioners, scientists, and engineers in affiliated disciplines. AAAI-13 will have multiple technical tracks, student abstracts, poster sessions, invited speakers, and exhibit programs, all selected according to the highest reviewing standards. AAAI-13 welcomes submissions on mainstream AI topics as well as novel crosscutting work in related areas. Topics include but are not limited to the following:

              • Constraints and Satisfiability
              • Heuristic Search and Optimization
              • Knowledge-Based Systems
              • Knowledge Representation and Reasoning
              • Machine Learning
              • Multiagent Systems
              • Applications
              • Multidisciplinary Topics
              • Natural-Language Processing
              • Reasoning About Plans, Processes and Actions
              • Reasoning Under Uncertainty
              • Robotics

Papers that extend the state of the art, and explore parts of the design space of AI that are not well explored, are particularly encouraged. A full list of keywords is available at the AAAI-13 website.

              Special Tracks

In addition to its main technical papers track, AAAI-13 will include several special paper tracks on focused topics, ideas previously presented at AI sister conferences, new challenges to the AI community, or other special areas of interest. The tracks are Artificial Intelligence and the Web, Cognitive Systems, Senior Members, Computational Sustainability and Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and AI Subarea Spotlights.

Each special track has its own submission process and review criteria, and includes a program committee of reviewers with appropriate backgrounds. However, the tracks will be an integral part of the conference program and will be subject to the same high standards and rigorous review that are traditional in AAAI. In the proceedings, the special track papers will not be distinguished from the main track technical papers. The chairs may move submissions between tracks in case that allows for more appropriate reviewing. See the AAAI-13 website for details about the tracks.

              Author Registration

Authors must register at the AAAI-13 web-based technical paper submission site (available December 3, 2012) before they submit their abstracts and papers. The software will assign a password, which will enable the author to log on to submit an abstract and paper. To avoid network problems in the last minute rush, authors are strongly encouraged to register as soon as possible after December 3, well in advance of the January 19 abstract deadline.

              • Registration will close at 11:59 PM PST on January 19, 2013.
              • Abstract submission will close at 11:59 PM PST on January 19, 2013.

              CALL FOR PAPERS

The ACL Student Session provides a venue for student researchers investigating topics in Computational Linguistics and Natural Language Processing to present their research, to meet potential advisors, and to receive feedback from the international research community.

The Student Session's goal is to aid students at multiple stages of their education: from those in the final stages of undergraduate training to those who are preparing their graduate thesis proposal. Towards this goal, we invite papers in two separate categories.

              1. Thesis/Research Proposals: This category is appropriate for experienced students who wish to get feedback on their proposal and broader ideas for the field in order to strengthen their final research.

              2. Research Papers: Most appropriate for students who are new to academic conferences. Papers in this category can describe completed work or work in progress with preliminary results.

Subject to the availability of established researcher volunteers, each accepted paper will be assigned a mentor, who will provide feedback on the work to the student at the conference. Separately, the committee will do its best to assign pre-submission mentors to students who wish to get feedback before the paper deadline. Good Freely Available Textbooks on Machine Learning

              • The Elements of Statistical Machine Learning is a great text covering most core topics in supervised learning along with a bit of unsupervised learning and some other specialist areas (like high dimensional problems).
              • Information Theory, Inference, and Learning Algorithms covers what the title suggests. It doesn't have a great deal of depth on the machine learning topics but is good for an overview of the techniques used in Bayesian inference.
              • Gaussian Processes for Machine Learning is the definitive reference for Gaussian processes.
              • Data-Intensive Text Processing with MapReduce contains patterns for implementing your algorithm in the Map-Reduce framework.
              • Reinforcement Learning: An Introduction covers the fundamentals of bandit algorithms and reinforcement learning in fully observable worlds (MDPs). Note it says very little about generalisation and practically nothing about acting in partially observable worlds (POMDPs). Since this book was published there has been substantial work in all areas of reinforcement learning; while the book will give you the basics you'll have to do a lot of reading in the literature to catch up to current work.
